on fragile sites (e.g. sandy) it may be best for traffic to establish the track; i.e. remove all obstacles, use temporary waymarking until the track is distinct, disguise confusing animal pads with dead vegetation
where hillslopes are less than 15, defined, sideling tracks can be allowed to self-bench under the impact of walkers
where hillslopes exceed 15 it is necessary to establish a minimum 300mm track on mineral earth by benching
